I took the old Revell
1/32 P-47D and totally reworked it. The process took me over 800 hours and 10 months of pretty constant work. The cockpit, wheel wells, landing gear, flaps, gun bay
and guns and everything from the firewall forward were scratch built. I used
Jerry Rutman's Hamilton Standard propeller and main tires and the Teknics resin
R-2800 engine.
The decals are Fred Yarema's
excellent set (made on the ALPS) depicting
(then) Lt Col Francis Gabreski's aircraft. I chose to depict his aircraft
shortly before it was lost in a forced landing.
This is
Monogram's 1/48 P-47D Bubbletop placed into a diorama depicting Gabby's
crash landing in Koblenz, Germany on 20 July 44. He was captured and
spent the rest of the war in Luft Stalag 1. The model is built primarily
out of the box with the exception of re-scribing and dropping the
elevators. Decals were home-made on the ALPs printer.
